BIR Launches Digital TIN ID
On December 1, 2023, the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) announced the launch of the digital taxpayer identification number (TIN) ID to make it easier for taxpayers to get a TIN without having to physically visit the Revenue District Offices (RDO).
According to BIR, the Digital TIN ID is an additional feature of its Online Registration and Update System (ORUS). This allows Filipinos to get a TIN number or update their information.
BIR Commissioner Romeo D. Lumagui Jr. said:
The Digital TIN ID system shows our commitment to providing Excellent Taxpayer Service. With this new system, we can eliminate the practice of fixers and scammers selling TIN online while giving taxpayers a convenient alternative in getting a TIN, instead of lining up at our Revenue District Offices.
Here are the key features of the BIR Digital TIN ID:
- The Digital TIN ID serves as a reference for the Taxpayer Identification Number of the taxpayer and as a valid government-issued identification document accepted in various government agencies, local government units, banks, employers, and other institutions. Its authenticity can be verified online via the ORUS system using the QR Code provided.
- Unlike physical TIN cards, the Digital TIN ID does not require a signature. The authenticity of the Digital TIN ID can be verified online through the ORUS just by scanning the QR Code appearing in the Digital TIN ID using a mobile device camera.
- Individual taxpayers with existing TIN can apply for the Digital TIN ID through ORUS. Users must enroll their accounts on the ORUS.
- The Digital TIN ID is a permanent identification document. Both the physical TIN card and Digital TIN ID remain valid, and holders need not secure a physical card if they possess a Digital TIN ID.
How to get your BIR Digital TIN ID online for free via ORUS?
Simply follow the guide below to obtain your BIR Digital TIN ID.
1. Make sure your email address is up to date before applying for your digital TIN ID. To do so, you may accomplish and submit Form S1905 – Registration Update Sheet (RUS) via email to your designated Revenue District Office or through BIR's eServices - Taxpayer Registration Related Application Portal (https://www.bir.gov.ph/trraportal).
2. Once your email is updated, visit https://orus.bir.gov.ph and create an ORUS account. From there, simply follow the step-by-step process and provide the required information.
3. The system will require you to upload a photo. BIR noted that in uploading a photo, clear, appropriate, and recent images that resemble the individual accurately should be followed. Uploading unrelated photos, such as cartoons, artists, animals, and other people's photos, will result in a penalty.
It is important to note that the Digital TIN ID is completely free and not available for sale. It is strongly advised for taxpayers to refrain from availing the services of online sellers who claim to offer TIN ID assistance, as there is a high risk of receiving fake or invalid TINs and being classified under the wrong taxpayer type. This can have negative implications on future transactions with the BIR. Hence, taxpayers are urged to obtain their TIN ID exclusively through the BIR's official website or RDOs.
The BIR digital TIN ID is a valid government-issued identification document that is widely accepted by various government agencies, local government units (LGUs), banks, employers, and other institutions. It serves as a reliable form of identification and is considered a crucial piece of documentation for many official transactions.
