Fall Family Activities

Fall is one of the best times of year to get outside and be active! The temperatures are cooler and there are many free, local activities to be a part of, below are five examples of fun fall activities for the entire family:

  1. Farmers' Markets
This is a good time to go to the farmers' markets. There is a wide
variety of food and as the summer winds down prices may be lower.
Depending on where you live, there also may be seasonal roadside farm
stands.  Information on how to use SNAP at the farmer’s markets can be
    found here.

  2. Try New Foods
Pumpkins, apples, berries, squash, and more are everywhere! It’s a great
time to get back into the kitchen as the temperatures drop. Try some
new recipes with the seasonal produce:

  3. Fall Festivals
Many towns and cities celebrate the seasonal change with activities,
music, and food. Check your local paper, town website or school
newsletters for any upcoming events. Baltimore has free activities
during October for Free Fall Baltimore. Other places like Oakland and
Catoctin celebrate the leaves turning color. These festivals and more in
your area can be found at
    https://www.visitmaryland.org/events-calendar

  4. Hiking
One of the best ways to enjoy the season is by walking. Walk around your
neighborhood, visit a park, or find a new walking trail.  While out,
collect fallen leaves that catch your eye. You can then press the leaves
to keep them by ironing them between wax paper or by placing them
inside a book. Try to identify leaves by checking out books at the
library or use this handout from Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources. Also be careful not to step on the woolly bears!

  5. Apple Orchard and Pumpkin Picking
Find a nearby apple orchard or pumpkin patch at
https://marylandsbest.maryland.gov/ .  These farms often have activities
such as hayrides and corn mazes, too. You will likely find other
products to purchase besides apples and pumpkins including:

    • Apple butter and pumpkin butter

    • Apple cider and apple juice

    • Squash

    • Baked goods

    Once
you find a nearby spot, see if they have any special activities or if
you can watch them press the apples for cider or apple juice, make apple
    butter, or decorate pumpkins.
