Valorant launched Drift, the newest Team Deathmatch (TDM) map, on December 5, 2023, along with the Episode 7 Act 3 update.
New TDM Map: Drift
Drift is a team deathmatch map inspired by Thailand and its floating markets. It features a long-range mid that offers players several paths to weave in and out of the space, allowing for more dynamic engagements. Players can expect to engage in a lot of aim duels while quickly switching lanes via an overhead rope they can jump to. Check out more information below.
Here's the description of the new Drift map as per Riot Games:
A TDM Map that features long site lines, weaving routes through Mid, and a fresh new look for VALORANT inspired by Thailand.
Here are the key features of Drift, Valorant's latest TDM map:
- Three-lane TDM layout
- Weaving routes around mid
- Long-range site lines
- New map thematic inspired by Thailand
For the uninitiated, Team Deathmatch or TDM is a 5v5 game mode in VALORANT that challenges players to take on an opposing team across custom maps.
In this game mode, players can select their loadout for each stage at the start of the match or when they are in the spawn room. The maps contain several weapon spawners, recovery orbs, and ultimate orbs. With four timed stages, no econ, and a quick 1.5-second respawn time, teams must aim to be the first to get 100 kills to secure their victory.
Regarding design goals for Drift, Joey Simas, Valorant's Lead Map Designer, said that, "Drift takes our approach to TDM maps and carves out more isolated lanes, allowing for more predictable fights."
For gameplay, Simas noted that they "wanted to create a long-range space that players would enjoy fighting over. There's lots of aim duels to be had, but there's also a rope overhead that players can jump up to and quickly swap lanes."
Simas also shared the challenges they encountered in designing the Drift map. He said that "the buildings and architecture in Thailand around a floating market are mostly made of wood." Simas said, "This proved to be a large challenge," especially when they "started to art the map because suddenly weapons could penetrate a lot of thick surfaces."
